Ellen V. Miller, age 99, of Woodland Township, died to this life on Thursday morning, May 13, 2010. Ellen was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 31, 1911 to Ollie and Anna (Mieras) Van Dam. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1929, and continued her education at the Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1932 as a Registered Nurse. Ellen worked as a private duty nurse until she enlisted the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1942. She served in hospitals in England and France during WW II and was discharged in 1946. Ellen continued her nursing career at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Battle Creek until her retirement in 1972. She and her husband, Glenn, moved from Galesburg to their home on Eagle Point in Woodland Township in 1977. Ellen had been deeply involved with the Woodland United Methodist Church and loved her church family. She also treasured the friendships she formed in the Woodland Women's Study Club. Ellen is survived by her sons, John and Julie Miller of Lake Odessa, and Paul Miller of Chinley, AZ; daughter-in-law, Emma Miller of Irving, TX; grandsons and great granddaughter, Matthew Miller, Eric (Sarah) Miller, Christopher (Liz) Miller, and Kurt (Kristin) Miller and their daughter, Kaley; special nieces and nephew, Christine Trevino, Mary Van Dam, and Don (Jackie) Van Dam. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, in 1986; and brothers, Al Van Dam and Paul Van Dam. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Woodland United Methodist Church with a time of visitation for one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial Park. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Woodland United Methodist Church.
