Shirley Ann Joppie, aged 75, of Lake Odessa, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning, February 16, 2010. Shirley was born in Grand Rapids on July 23, 1934 to Russell and Letha (Smith) McLenithan. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1952, and was united in marriage to Wes Joppie on August 9, 1952. Shirley had been the Director of E.B.I. Breakthru in Lake Odessa for 19 years, and served as the Executive Director of Moore Living Center in Lansing until her retirement in 1992. She was an avid seamstress, loved traveling and camping, and enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sports and all their other activities. She was the World's Best Grandma! Shirley is survived by her husband, Wes; daughters, Julie Joppie, Cindy (Chris) Dempster, Melanie (Kevin) Dow, and Lisa (David) White; 9 grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Buck) Cunningham; brothers, Bill (Marilyn) McLenithan and Robert (Jan) Plants; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cleo (Gerri) Joppie; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Vernon Plants; and two granddaughters, Ashley Dow and Angel White. Visitation will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Friday, February 19. The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 20 at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Lake Odessa. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or the Lakewood Athletic Association.
